What to Know about H1N1
H1N1 Influenza Infection in Cats
The H1N1 influenza virus, often referred to as “swine flu,” is contagious to cats. While the spread of this virus is no longer an emergency, it continues to circulate worldwide.
Symptoms
Symptoms in cats can range from mild to severe, and some may show no signs at all. Common symptoms include:
Coughing
Sneezing
Lethargy
Lack of appetite
Runny eyes or nose
Fever
Labored breathing
Most infected cats experience mild to moderate symptoms, but some cases can be severe.
Diagnosis
H1N1 may be suspected if a sick cat exhibits flu-like symptoms, especially if a human in the household is also ill. Diagnosis is confirmed through PCR testing of nasal or throat swabs. Additional blood tests and chest X-rays may be recommended to rule out other conditions or assess lung health.
Treatment
Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms. Care includes:
Keeping eyes and nose clean
Encouraging or hand-feeding to maintain appetite if needed
Using antibiotics to manage secondary infections if the vet indicates this is needed
Providing fluid therapy to prevent dehydration
Prevention
Good hygiene is key to preventing H1N1 in cats. Wash your hands frequently and avoid contact with sick individuals or animals whenever possible.
