The Importance of Preventive Care: A Real-Life Example
Preventive care is the cornerstone of keeping our feline companions happy and healthy throughout their lives. While cats are known for their stoic nature, which often masks signs of illness, regular check-ups are essential for detecting hidden health issues before they escalate. A recent case at our clinic perfectly illustrates why preventive care is so vital.
A Routine Exam with a Surprising Finding
A 5-year-old domestic neutered male cat, named Tito, was brought in by his owner for a routine wellness exam. Tito appeared completely healthy to his owner—he was eating, playing, and behaving as usual. However, during the physical examination, our veterinarian noticed something unusual: Tito’s spleen was swollen.
This finding came as a surprise to the owner, who had observed no outward signs of discomfort or illness. Further diagnostic tests were conducted, and treatment was promptly initiated. Because the issue was identified early during a routine visit, we were able to address it before it could develop into a more serious problem.
The Outcome
Thanks to the preventive care Tito received, the condition was managed effectively, and he returned to his normal, happy self without any long-term complications. This case highlights an important point: if Tito hadn’t come in for his routine exam, the swollen spleen might have gone undetected until it caused significant health issues—possibly even a life-threatening emergency.
Why Preventive Care Matters
Stories like Tito’s emphasize why routine check-ups are critical for every cat, regardless of their apparent health. Here are some reasons why preventive care should be a priority:
Early Detection of Hidden Issues: Cats often hide signs of illness, making it difficult for owners to know when something is wrong. Regular exams allow veterinarians to catch problems early, often before symptoms appear.
Better Outcomes with Timely Intervention: Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent minor issues from becoming major health crises, improving the chances of successful treatment.
Tailored Health Plans: Preventive care visits include discussions about diet, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and other aspects of feline health, ensuring your cat receives personalized care.
Cost-Effective Care: Addressing health issues early can save significant costs in the long run by avoiding emergency treatments and advanced illnesses.
Tips and Information for Scheduling routine care at Just Cats
It is important to be proactive to ensure there are no lapses in yearly examinations and vaccinations. Here are some tips to get your feline companion in when it is time:
Call ahead of time. Just Cats books out on average around 4-6 weeks, sometimes longer in the summer months. We send out reminders 2 months ahead of when your cat is due for services. Schedule when you receive that first reminder to ensure you get the location closest to you; and the day and time you want.
We offer booking via email, phone call or you can request an appointment through our website. There is a link in the reminder we send that gives you all of our scheduling options. Please note, your appointment is not set until one of our friendly team members confirms the appointment.
Have a hard time getting your cat to the vet?
Just Cats offers different solutions to make it easier to get your cat in their carrier, and to their appointment. We offer “Comfort Kits,” which has instructions on how to get your cat in the carrier easier, plus some gabapentin, which is a safe and effective medication to relax your cat.
We are excited to announce we are now offering Bonqat®! (https://www.zoetisus.com/products/cats/bonqat)LINK
Bonqat® is a new medication designed for those difficult or impossible to medicate cats as an alternative to gabapentin. It is a palatable, oral solution that can be mixed in with your cat’s food or favorite treat, and they will not suspect a thing!
