Educational Seminars in 2017
FELINE DENTISTRY - Monday, May 8, 2017 (Saratoga office)
Did you know that periodontal disease is present in most cats over the age of 3? If left untreated, oral disease can lead to pain and discomfort, behavior changes, heart disease, kidney failure, and even cancer. Kimberly Demars, LVT, VTS will teach us how to care for our cat’s teeth at home, what are common diseases and dental problems we see in cats, and how we can maintain optimum oral health for our feline friends.
WHY DOES MY CAT DO THAT: FELINE BEHAVIOR EXPLAINED - Monday, June 12, 2017 (Guilderland office)
From scratching up furniture, to peeing or pooping outside the litterbox, to inter-cat aggression – Dr. Susan Sikule will go into detail about why we see common behavioral issues and what we can do about them. There is a long list of cat behaviors that can be perplexing and even frustrating. Feel free to bring your stories and questions so we can get to the bottom of your cat’s behavior.
HOSPICE CARE - Monday, July 17, 2017 (Saratoga office)
It can be difficult to think about how our furry friends aren’t always going to be with us. Whatever stage of life your cat may be in, it may be very helpful to address end-of-life questions and concerns. Dr. Denise Petersen will explain what hospice care for cats looks like, how you can work with your veterinarian to assist with pain and palliative care as your cat ages, and what to expect with the grieving process.
ESSENTIAL OILS FOR CATS - Friday, August 11, 2017 (Guilderland office)
Essential oils are becoming increasingly recognized within the medical field as a powerful and beneficial option that can successfully address or aid a wide variety of medical and preventative care needs for our feline patients. Learn about how you can safely integrate essential oils into your cat’s care at home and how they have played a critical role in the recovery of some of our Just Cats patients.
FELINE NUTRITION - Monday, September 18, 2017 (Saratoga office)
We’re sure you’ve heard the phrase “You are what you eat.” Underestimating the importance of your cat’s diet can lead to painful and costly diseases as your cat ages. From arthritis, to diabetes, to urinary blockages – Dr. Denise Petersen will explain the side effects of a poor diet and what we can do as cat parents to make sure our cats are set up for a long and healthy life.

Dreams to Action: Attorney Claudia Ryan Scrubs in as Volunteer Veterinarian at Just Cats Veterinary Clinic, P.C.
From left to right: Principal Susan F. Bartkowski, Amanda Landi, Principal Claudia A. Ryan, Dr. Susan Sikule, Kathryn Sikule and Ruth Fein
ALBANY, NY (June 15, 2015) – On Sunday, March 8th, Attorney Claudia A. Ryan, Principal at Towne, Ryan & Partners, P.C., the largest New York State certified Women Business Enterprise (WBE) law firm in Upstate New York, sat on a stage at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs for an informal discussion entitled “Dreams to Action” at the One Woman. One World. event celebrating International Women’s Day.
Ms. Ryan along with fellow Towne, Ryan & Partners P.C. Principal Susan Bartkowski had been asked to speak to an audience full of inspiring and powerful women about the process of becoming certified as a Women Business Enterprise in New York State.
Despite her career as a respected and well-known attorney in the Capital District, Ms. Ryan has never been fond of public speaking engagements. So when the floor turned over to her that Sunday afternoon, Ms. Ryan decided to take a turn in a less expected direction.
Ms. Ryan’s opening statement echoed what many women in that room had probably heard multiple times in their lives and multiple times within their careers. She explained to the audience that as a young girl she had always dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. She dreamed that she would follow in her father’s footsteps and eventually own her own successful veterinary practice. That was up until one fateful day when her parents sat her down and told her that her dream was not going to become a reality.
Why you ask? Because she is a woman.
The words ran deep in a room full of women from different backgrounds with different and equally touching stories to tell. So much so that one veterinarian in the room, Dr. Susan Sikule, owner of Just Cats Veterinary Clinic, P.C. in Guilderland and Saratoga Springs, decided she was going to help Ms. Ryan fulfill her childhood dreams.
On Wednesday, June 17th, the tables will turn for Ms. Ryan as she shadows Dr. Sikule at Just Cats. Ms. Ryan will have the opportunity to mask up and observe a day in the life of a woman veterinarian. She will follow Dr. Sikule as she examines hospitalized cats and performs surgery.
“Claudia is such a great model for young women exploring careers. She shows us that it is the drive to succeed in whatever you do that is most important. We are so excited to have her join us for the day,” said Dr. Sikule.
For most, the turn of events that led to this opportunity may seem far-fetched, but for Ms. Ryan – she is just putting her dreams to action.
“Who said dreams don’t always come true? I am very excited to have the opportunity to shadow Dr. Sikule and her staff,” said Ms. Ryan
